Application & Interview

The Internal Medicine Residency participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and abides by all regulations in the recruitment and selection of students. The program’s participation is solely through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Applicants are encouraged to review the ERAS Application Information.

To be eligible for admission to the Internal Medicine Residency applicants must:

A. Submit an online application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

B. Meet the eligibility requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

1. Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOACOCA); or, graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:

a. Holding a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment; or,

b. Holding a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States licensing jurisdiction in which the ACGME-accredited program is located.

C. Graduate from an accredited medical school within the last three years and/or have had direct patient care responsibilities in the capacity of a physician within the last three years.

D. Be eligible to become fully licensed physician-in-training in the State of Iowa.

E. Complete the necessary application materials:

1. ERAS Common Application Form.

2. Medical School Dean's Letter.

3. Three current letters of recommendation. One letter of recommendation must be from an Internal Medicine physician who has directly observed the applicant's clinical skills.

4. Official medical school transcripts.

5. Copies of Board Scores (USMLE or COMLEX).

F. Must be fluent in written and verbal English

G. Additionally, applicants with a visa status must meet the following qualifications:

1. Graduation from a U.S. Medical School; or,

2. Completion of an observership on the Internal Medicine Teaching Service at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.

a. An applicant for observership must be recommended by a current colleague or medical staff member in good standing at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.

b. An applicant must receive one letter of recommendation from a medical staff member in good standing at MercyOne North Iowa.
